The Harding Tavern

Translucent through the liquid amber I sip, sits a long mahogany bar adorned with liquor bottles sparkling, waiting to be mixed into a proper cocktail. The low light casts a warm glow throughout the intimate space. The clinking of glasses and soft laughter is complemented by the muffled rumble of the train just below.  The Harding Tavern is cornered between North Spaulding and North Milwaukee Ave., which sits just on top of the Logan Square Blue Line stop.

High windows adorned with dark interior paneling exude the presence of the building’s predecessor.  The namesake of the local neighborhood gastropub is a tribute to The Harding Theatre, erected and opened in 1925.  The Harding Theatre was one of the largest theatres in Logan Square, seating roughly 3,000 people. After 38 years of cinema, The Harding Theatre was closed in 1963 and demolished a year later.

Today, people can walk through the doors of the tavern, greeted with the delightful smell of garlic, the soft scraping of a spatula, and all the offerings written on “The Chalkboard.”  Sit at the long bar, or at the many table tops that surround it.  Try to pick at least one beer out of the 12 on tap, or if that didn’t make the decision hard enough, sift through the 50 other kinds offered in a bottle or can.  Look for the Happy Lagunitas Hour special Monday - Thursday from 3 - 6 p.m. or try one of the monthly rotating beers.  This month’s beer is Great Lakes Christmas Ale, for $5.

If beer isn’t your thing, order one of their classic cocktails.  A “Manhattan” or an “Old Fashioned” go a long way to quench your thirst. If you are looking for something a little more unique, try the “Gone by Dawn” or the more famous THT signature cocktail “El Chapo.”  With so many to choose from, it would be a shame to have just one.

Drinks taste fantastic and everything, but sometimes you just want something delicious in your stomach.  Try the lunch special of the day or just go straight for the bar-favorite THT burger. The ground in-house burger is balanced with spicy fresh herb aioli, brie cheese, sprinkled arugula, and let’s not forget about the best part, the bacon.

If a burger is not what you are feeling in the moment, try their wings in either a Thai, Buffalo, or Mango Habanero flare.  Or if you just want some comfort food, order the mac and cheese. The bleu, cheddar, cotija, fresh herbs, breadcrumbs, and bacon (yes more bacon) will have you wanting to order more.  Saturday and Sunday have a totally different brunch menu that should be accompanied by a Bloody Mary.  Breakfast and a drink? Who doesn’t want that?

One of the best attributes of The Harding Tavern is you can order late.  The kitchen remains open from 11 a.m. to midnight every day and until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.  A perfect opportunity to catch your second wind on the weekends.

The Harding Tavern is quite accommodating offering vegetarian options and the ability to add an egg on anything.  Yup, anything, and everything.  They are even more accommodating with their half-price appetizers after 10 p.m.  More for less? Second dinner? Hell yes.

You can view the preparation of your order through the open kitchen, making your craving even more evident.  You’ll want to scarf your meal faster, but you’ll instantly wish you didn’t and could repeat it all over again just to relish in the flavorful food.

Around the bar are many televisions where you can watch your favorite sports team win, or lose.  Depends on who you root for, but don’t worry, The Harding Tavern has all the means to drown your sorrows or eat your sore losing feelings.  The televisions are always on, people will be cheering or watching anxiously, but this bar is by no means your typical “sports bar.”  The games are never so loud you can’t strike up a conversation with the person sitting next to you. You may cheer for the Cubs while the person next to you is cheering for the White Sox.  A friendly competition is just another reason to have a drink.

Some people like sports, some don’t. For everyone not in the sports realm, there are monthly beer events you can bring a few friends along to. This month, December 19th from 7-9 p.m., The Harding Tavern is hosting a Keep the Pint Night with Great Lakes. Again, bring your friends.  You can also always strike up a conversation with one of the bartenders.  They genuinely want to talk with you.  Talk with your neighbor.  Share a beer. Kick back on the patio (when it’s not the tundra outside) with a good drink, food, and you can even bring your pup to sit with you because everyone is welcome.

Around the bar I see that new people have come in, new conversations have started up, and laughter continuously surges. I feel the rumble of the train under my toes again.  I take one last sip and set it down contemplating having another. I don’t feel inclined to leave just yet.  Looking around on the walls, I see old black-and-white pictures of The Harding Theatre.  I contemplate no more because I’ll be damned if I don’t cheers to what once was and embrace this piece of Logan Square history with another beer. Or two.
