Café Con Leche
From behind tall frosted windows, the warm flickering of a fireplace can be seen as I walk down North Milwaukee Ave. Water slowly drips down the glass creating intricate designs that allow you to look through the blurred scene. Small tea light candles illuminate the long room lined with tables. An intimate little place. I decide to warm my freezing fingers and step inside.
Walking past the main area of seating to the back of the restaurant sits a stoned topped bar situated in the corner across from three high tables. The flames of the fire dance across the lined bottles behind the bar and the lofted wine rack. Stacked against brick walls, sits two shelves housing only tequila. Each bottle spaced so each has its own spotlight in which customers can pick from to have their favorite salt rimmed margarita mixed. Where most bars in Chicago are whiskey heavy, Café Con Leche has a large taste for tequila.
Not everyone likes tequila which works just perfectly anyways. Looking for local drinks? The six beers on draft are waiting to be pulled to serve your next libation. Choose from Half Acre’s Daisy Cutter and Revolution Brewery’s Fitmas are on tap as well as Laguintas IPA, Negra Modelo, Pacifico, and Dos Equis. You can have a taste of latin beers or local beers. Both are great choices to me.
Some may be familiar with Café Con Leche in the morning that turns into De Noche in the evening. Now after seven years, De Noche has merged to now be one in the same with Cafe Con Leche. The menus are combined to offer all the latin foods to satisfy every craving.
People from all over Chicago come to Café con Leche because the food is just so damn authentic. You can have a great breakfast, a great lunch and great dinner. That’s just great, right? And nothing has changed with the merging of the restaurants, just one name. All day. All the meals. All the love for friends, family, and a round of tequila cheer.
Heard of the Jibarito? The Chicago local story all started in Humbolt Park. This sandwich can make all your taste buds honestly feel the food, not just savor the feeling. I mean it’ll do that too, but it’s a sandwich with garlic-flavored mayonnaise, meat, cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes. I don’t know what else would make your taste buds dance.
Well I may know of one thing? A perfectly crafted, salt-rimmed, delectable margarita. Margarita Mondays takes on a whole new meaning when there are $5 margaritas during the happy hour and a pitcher for $20. You can even add a dash of tropical flavor. But if you are not in the margarita mood, that’s fine. There are so many other options to choose from.
With six crafted cocktails, you need to try them all to find your favorite. The most popular cocktails are the Oaxacan Old Fashioned cocktail which is made of xicaru Mezcal, Agave nectar, orange, pineapple, and bitters. Sounds like a taste of paradise in this upcoming winter. Another popular cocktail is the La Chilanga with Astral Tequila, triple sec, muddled strawberries, jalapeno, and lime. That jalapeno makes for one spicey hot cocktail (dad jokes are always acceptable). What makes these cocktails so refreshing is everything is muddled in-house. Nothing is from concentrate and every drink tastes like a little piece of well, delicious awesomeness.
As mentioned before, the happy hour is probably the best around with it starting at 4 PM and ending at 7 PM, Monday through Friday. You can have one hell of a tequila high and live like you are on vacation for about 3 hours. Or if it is indeed the summer, sit out on one of the two patios that Café Con Leche has. One in the front so anyone that passes by is instantly jealous of what you are drinking, eating, or the fantastic time you are having. The second patio, located in the back, is just a stone’s throw away from the parking lot. Parking lots in Chicago? I’m in.
You can also head over to The Walk In for that extra happy hour hour until 8 PM and order your food to be delivered free from Café con Leche to The Walk in. Free food delivery while having another 60 minutes of happy hour drink specials? Sounds like a super happy hour marathon.
It is also not uncommon to see families at this lovely little establishment. Many of the same groups of people attend a lot of the Cafe con Leche’s events. The New Years Eve event has very similar faces as the Valentine's Day group. It’s obviously a place people want to continually attend to celebrate good times. It’s easy to enjoy each other's company when the food, drinks, and staff are delightful. Café Con Leche is the hospitable family-oriented venue for any occasion.
This establishment is so diverse, and yet oh so welcoming. Some people show up in PJs, while some may come dressed like they are about to hit up some clubs later. It’s like a choose your own adventure starting point. No matter how you are dressed, you’ll walk away, whether in six-inch high heels or your slippers, with a happy stomach.
When it isn’t a blizzard of freezing cold outside, Café Con Leche hosts tequila tasting and beer/food pairing events. Any reason to eat good food and have a little drink sounds like a good plan to me. But for now because winter is here, the seasonal beers can be paired with the seasonal dish of Salmon Grajillo which is made with peanut sauce, mexican rice, and grilled asparagus.
My absolute favorite part of this place is that Sunday Funday is way better because it is brunch day at Cafe con Leche. Start lining up at about 11 AM because it’s about to get real packed. The wait is always worth it though. It really isn’t a wait at all when you are surrounded by some awesome-ass people. You get a little waiting period to catch up and anticipate what is sure to be an awesome start to your possibly hungover day. Wake your senses up with a a coffee or having a helping hand with a sip of the hair-of-the-dog. Whether it be a caffeine kick-starter or a bloody mary made from heaven, you are sure to be one happy human being. I say have both because this sunday, I know where my hungover ass will be.
